Strategic Energy Planning
RSM works jointly with its customers to develop strategic energy plans
following these steps:
- Assessing the external situation
(opportunities and threats)
- Assessing the internal situation
(strengths and weaknesses)
- Modeling different situations to
produce forecasts
- Determining the goals and necessary
resources
- Executing the plan
Managing Energy Information
Effective energy data management provides the customer
with information to budget, forecast, benchmark and properly
allocate costs. The data record system will also
highlight exceptions where attention must be focused. A
proper cash management system also helps reduce costs and
facilitates risk management.
Optimizing Utility Service
Most of North America still does not have a competitive power
supply for retail customers. However, the competitive wholesale
market is causing many changes in the way retail energy
markets are structured. RSM analyzes each customer
account to determine if the account is on the best available
rate. We also assist with utility negotiations and
evaluations of utility proposals.
Monitoring of Regulatory, Utility and
Market Changes
The purpose of this service is to ensure that our customers
are informed in a timely manner of changes that can affect
their energy plans. With this early warning of new
developments, customers and RSM can prepare a response to position them to
take full advantage of changes.
Procuring Energy in Competitive Markets
As an experienced buyer's agent, we make the energy supply arrangements for
direct purchase and delivery for many facilities all over the continent. RSM prefers continuous
competition to one-time bids and uses standard contract terms to
protect the customer's interest. We frequently
urge our customers to participate in pilot programs to help
influence the direction of utility policy.
Implementing Risk Management Programs
Energy price volatility is becoming a key problem in the
developing energy market. RSM helps evaluate risks, and uses hedging tools to mitigate
those risks. Energy supply contracts should be structured to
allow customers to effectively use the futures
market. Hedging strategies will necessarily become
sophisticated as the energy market matures.
Energy Use Monitoring, Analysis and
Control
Detailed data, usually in 15 or 30-minute intervals, obtained
from the facility's meter or energy management system frequently
identifies opportunities for better purchasing and operating
practices. RSM urges that computerized building
automation systems be enhanced to include control during
periods of high power costs. RSM helps with the design,
installation and operation of energy management systems.
We also assist with the development and implementation of
demand control strategies.
Developing Energy Conservation Projects
As a result of working with energy billing data
and interval use data, we are uniquely able to spot investment
opportunities for energy conservation. We analyze the
value and cost of energy saving measures and produce reports
that demonstrate the return on projects. RSM is
available to act as project manager for the implementation of
such projects.
Managing Fuel Supply
Large natural gas users usually receive interruptible service
and are faced with complex choices about alternative fuel
costs and its availability. RSM assists with the
management of the alternative fuel supply delivery, assuring
its supply and mitigation of price risk. RSM analyzes
fuel choices and advises customers when there are changes in
the market.
Tenant Lease Energy Charges
When our customers are paying for energy through a landlord, we review the
charges to assure proper billing and to assess saving opportunities. We
represent the customer's best interest by providing technical assistance in
determining the tenant's allocation of energy charges. |
